PLUMPJACK, Chardonnay Reserve - 2010 - Napa Valley, CA
Sourced primary from Pat Garvey's P&J Vineyard in St. Helena with the balance from Andy Beckstoffer's Carneros Lake Vineyard to add a litte cool-climate snap, the 2010 Plumpjack Reserve Napa Chardonnay was fermented in a combination of oak and stainless steel, and did not undergo malolactic fermentation. This is surprising given the richness on the palate, but the folks at Plumpjack credit the great texture of the wine to the quality of the fruit from their St. Helena source, claiming malo isn't necessary. A fruit driven nose opens with aromas of apples, pear, and citrus, with baking spice accents. The palate is rich and encompassing, as the fresh fruit profile gives way to baked fruits, exotic spice, and notes of brioche. There is a subtle herb note on the finish, which is tangy and refreshing.
