10 July 1890. Here our story begins. That day, five Riojan and Basque families who shared a passion for wine, founded the ‘Sociedad Vinícola de La Rioja Alta’. Thus began an exciting business venture whose founders enthusiastically shared the dream of making and ageing top-quality Rioja wines. The region with a winemaking tradition dating back thousands of years benefited from the arrival in the late 19th century of French winemakers who had been affected by the devastating phylloxera.

In the difficult art of creating great wines, we combine the wisdom of tradition and the state of the art. In addition to the century-old winery in Haro, we have modern facilities located in Labastida where we make wine from our own grapes with the help of the most advanced technology.

Oak is at the core of the ageing process and we therefore manufacture our own barrels —which currently number about 30,000— using completely artisanal methods. With import the wood from the United States and dry it in the open air for two years. Our coopers make every barrel in the cooperage of our hundred-year-old facilities in Haro.

Every six months, we manually rack every barrel under candlelight. It is an art to enhance the development of the wine, removing sediments in a natural way and monitoring each barrel individually.

After a stay in barrels, the wines continue ageing in the bottle, where they polish their personality, rounding off and fully developing all their qualities.

Tasting Notes :

Medium-high depth, dark-cherry red with an intense garnet-red rim. Clean and bright. Intense aromas, typical of this Rioja Alavesa terroir, with notes of ripe berries (blackberries, blueberries and raspberry jam) against a background of spices, clove, aniseed, incense, tobacco, and mocha. Mild attack with medium body and nice structure. It is well-balanced with sweet tannins. A wine that stands out for its broad and silky aftertaste, where notes of ripe fruit and sweet spices complement those from painstaking barrel ageing.
