Nestled under the southern foothills of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley, Clos Henri is the wine estate meticulously established and organically run by the famous Sancerre wine growing family of Henri Bourgeois. Gathering 10 generations of know-how with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, the family have broadened their horizons and continue to craft exceptional wines in New Zealand.
From the three different soil types of the estate, partially comprised of a hill slope, the family uses the best of French and New World winegrowing techniques to capture the essence of Marlborough’s intense character and reveal the identity of the Clos Henri terroir.
Natural wine growing pairs perfectly with this as the ‘less is more’ practices allow the wine to truly express where it has come from. “It’s also about respect for what we have, and what we will leave for generations to come” says Fabiano Frangi, Clos Henri’s Vineyard Manager. Our most recent venture is our newly installed cow pat pits.
The pits are half cut wine barrels in the ground, (recycling materials of course!) containing a mixture of cow manure, Basalt rock, crushed egg shells and a biodynamic preparation. This mixture is covered and decomposes over 3-4 months before it’s mixed with water and used as a spray over the vines. This is a specialized way of composting which provides the vines with unique bacteria and fungi that resist against disease in the vineyard, and give back to the vines.
“The results of being natural show in the vineyard and in the wines. You can feel and observe the response from the land of organic and biodynamic practices, that’s why we trust it. We are producing quality grapes that are not altered by chemicals and we’re not being detrimental to the land we work with or the environment around us.” says Fabiano.
"Pale to medium ruby in color and revealing a wonderfully perfumed nose of lavender and roses wrapped around a good core of red cherries and pomegranate plus a touch of humus, the medium-bodied 2012 Pinot Noir is structured by a good backbone of grainy tannins and just enough acid to support the delicate red berry and earth flavors. It finishes long." (Robert Parker)
There's a lovely combination of aromas of a forest and roses with tasty notes of cherries, orange peel, dried cranberries, a touch of minerality and a very long soft finish. The wine really expresses the place where it comes from.
Try this wine with cheese, duck, salmon, and definitely Asian cuisine.
