Le Roc des Anges Reliefs is sourced from ancient Carignan and Grenache vines which are 70 to 100 years of age. These old vines are apparent in the significant power and length of the weighty, yet fresh wine. Full-bodied and substantial but incredibly light on its feet, Reliefs is paired best with roasted leg of lamb on any night for the next 10-15 years.
The 40 hecatres of Domaine Roc des Anges, run by the incredible Marjorie Gallet, is nestled in the northern reaches of the Roussillon, in the shadow of the Pyrenees. It’s tough country; windy, hot and dry with very poor soil. Winegrowers battle low yield, alcohol, high PH and bacteria. But from that mineral rock, Marjorie coaxes incredibly vibrant wines, aromatically complex and loaded with fresh fruit. Facing north is part of the secret of Roc des Anges. Each of her 43 different parcels of vines face north, allowing for a cooler exposure in Roussillon's brutal summer heat. Farming biodynamically encourages deep root penetration, and the cultivation of a high leaf canopy provides for great photosynthesis and good shade for the grapes. Every grape at Roc des Anges is picked by hand, at the coolest parts of the day, and are kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing that great finesse and freshness in every wine.
