The highest rated, and best known vineyard in the Graves wine-region, in Bordeaux. So highly prized is this vineyard, that it was included with the famous vineyards of Margaux, Latour and Lafite in the 1855 classification of the Haut-Medoc, even though it is many miles away from the other vineyards. The vineyard of Château Haut Brion is planted to 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc. The high Merlot content, compared to the Médoc First Growths, gives the wine a voluptuous edge, but does not in any way detract from its ability to age. Haut Brion was purchased by the American financier and politician Clarence Dougless Dillion in 1935. His granddaughter still owns and operates Haut-Brion to this day.
